What To Do When Your Fridge Isn't Keeping Things Cool

Your fridge's primary job is to keep things cool. If your fridge is not keeping things cool, you need to figure out why your fridge isn't keeping things cool as it should.

Check the Cord

The first thing you are going to want to do is check the cord for the refrigerator. You will want to make sure that the plug hasn't gotten partially knocked out of the socket. If the cord is plugged in, but not all the way, your fridge may still run, but not optimally. Make sure that the cord is plugged all the way in and see if that fixes the issue.

Check the Thermostat

The second thing you are going to want to check is the thermostat. If the thermostat was adjusted to the warmer end of things on accident, your fridge might feel a little too warm. Adjust the thermostat so that it is set to a cooler setting, close the fridge door, and give it a few hours. If your fridge is cooler in a few hours, then the thermostat just needed to be readjusted. If not, then you need to keep troubleshooting.

Check the Freezer Vents

Your fridge and freezer work together. The freezer's air vent allows cool air from the freezer to get pulled down into your fridge, keeping things cool. If the freezer vent is blocked by something in your freezer, such as a box of ice cream, that could be keeping your fridge warmer than it should be. Rearrange things in your freezer and see if that fixes the issue.

Check the Coils

Next, you are going to want to check the coils on your fridge. If your coils get clogged up with debris, your coils are not going to function correctly. If you have lots of pets, pet hairs can easily clog up the coils located on either the underside or back of your fridge. You are going to want to check the coil and see if they are dirty. If they are, you are going to want to vacuum your coils. Just remove all that hair, dust, and debris may be all your coils need to keep your fridge cool.

Check the Condenser Fan

Finally, you are going to want to check the condenser fan. The condenser fan should be spinning around easily. If it is not, unplug your fridge and carefully check the fan blades. If the fan blades are damaged, they will not pull in enough air to keep your compressor running.

If your fridge isn't keeping things cool, check the power cord, thermostat, freezer air vent, coils, and condenser fan. If you can't find the issue yourself, bring in a skilled appliance repair technician to assist with repairing your fridge.
